What are the towers of Neuchâtel Castle?

The Clock Tower This square tower, housing a clock, was built in the 14th century. It stands approximately 30 meters tall and is one of the most iconic symbols of Neuchâtel Castle.
The Prison Tower Constructed in the 13th century, this tower was used to imprison criminals. It measures around 20 meters in height and is located at the southern end of the castle.
The Market Tower Built in the 16th century, this tower served as a market hall for traders. It stands approximately 24 meters tall and is situated at the northern end of the castle.
The Collegiate Tower: Also known as the Church Tower, this tower was built in the 12th century and was part of the Saint-Pierre church that once stood on the castle site. It measures around 22 meters in height and is located at the eastern end of the castle.

The Treasure of Neuchâtel Castle

An unusual fact about Neuchâtel Castle in Switzerland is that it houses a medieval treasure hidden for over 700 years.

In 1937, during renovation work, workers discovered a small hiding place within the castle walls. Inside, they found a collection of gold and silver coins dating back to the 14th century, hidden there during the period when the Counts of Neuchâtel ruled the city.

The treasure consisted of more than 4,000 coins, with a total weight of over 20 kilograms, as well as jewelry and precious objects. It is now displayed at the Museum of Art and History in the city of Neuchâtel.

This treasure hidden for centuries serves as a fascinating reminder of the rich and complex history of the city of Neuchâtel and its castle.
